The name Hikkaduwa is thought to have been gotten from the two words Sip Kaduwa, with Sip (සිප්) being the more limited variant of Shilpaya which alludes to information in Sinhalese and Kaduwa(කඩුව) which implies sword. It is accepted hence that the name Hikkaduwa implies the sword of information. Then again it implies coral or shell jungle.[2].Hikkaduwa's economy was generally founded on fishing and coconut development. This was supplanted by the travel industry when its brilliant sandy seashores were found. It is a notable worldwide objective for board-surfing. The town was included in a scene of Anthony Bourdain's TV program No Reservations.[citation needed]
Hikkaduwa was influenced by the tidal wave brought about by the 2004 Indian Ocean quake alongside close by towns Telwatta, Paraliya (site of the Queen of the Sea rail calamity), Dodanduwa, Kahawa, and Rathgama. In the repercussions of the tidal wave, a large number of the families who had lost everything were given sewing machines as a feature of the alleviation tasks. Therefore, the town has a large number of tailors who will handcraft shirts, pants, and shorts.
